I finally got around to trying the notorious dupe for the YSL Glossy Stains that I have been hearing about for months now! I don't own any YSL Glossy Stains and the most I have had in contact with them is swatching them on my hand a long time ago at Sephora, so I'll have to take everyone's word for it. What did intrigue me though, was the fact that a lip product that costs $10 rivals a high end product going for $34! (I mean let's face it, those are always the best finds!)
I remembered seeing these when they first came out and thought the packaging was really nice, the applicator looked interesting, and there was a nice selection of pinks (my fave!). Months went by and I never purchased them because I just thought they were a lip gloss...nothing special and I have so many already, I don't need anymore.
Then a coupon popped up in my email I think, $2 off a L'OREAL lip product. So I did what any responsible shopper would do. I bought something I didn't need, and told myself the coupon justifies the purchase. Right?! No?! Whatever.
So I picked up Pink Rebellion which from the package looked like a hot magenta color. Totally right up my alley. I have to admit though, I was not a big fan that these do not come sealed...who knows what people do with them or where their hands have been. Hello, germ fest! Anyways, I picked the one that looked the least tampered with and I'm happy to report no herpes...yet.
As you can see, the applicator is wider than a standard doe foot applicator and has a pointed oval shape. I found this shape made application really easy and I have to say I'm a fan.
With my first application, I was pretty disappointed. The color was not as opaque as I was expecting and the formula was much thinner than a typical gloss. I was ready to toss it in the return pile but I decided to put on just one more coat. Thank goodness I did, because that second coat made all the difference! The color came through much more but the formula still threw me off because it was much thinner than what I was expecting. So I did a little research and what do you know...it's a stain with a glossy finish. Yea, why that did not register in my brain is one of those forever unanswerable questions. le sigh.
Now knowing it was a stain made so much more sense! As I mentioned in a previous post here: Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, I'm not a fan of those marker type lip stains. I love the idea of having a stain of color on your lips but the markers always applied blotchy or were drying. This was definitely not the case with this product. As I mentioned, the formula is thin so it's lightweight like a stain but it shines and feels moisturizing like a gloss (minus any sticky feeling). They remind me of a jelly nail polish but for your lips! Oh and the staining power is so nice. It does a great job of leaving some color on your lips as it wears. If you like lip stains, I think you will really enjoy these!

*I didn't clean the foundation off my lips before applying the lip stain, but you get the idea of the sheerness of the stain*
